ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES

Who is it for?

The Access to Higher Education or Degree Foundation Course is a course that prepares students specifically for study at degree level in the chosen subjects. It has been developed specifically for adult students and leads to the award of a nationally recognised Access Certificate.

Access courses provide a route into higher education if you are aged 21+ (exceptions may be considered) and have not got the formal qualifications to start a degree course straight away.

Aims of the course

To equip students with the skills and some underpinning knowledge needed to succeed in Higher Education.

What will I study?

Course content and structure

The course contains study/academic and research skills, numeracy skills and a GCSE equivalence in English. Students will also study Sociology, Psychology, and ICT.

Options

You can study a wide variety of subjects leading to a range of degrees and careers. What you will study depends on the particular course you have elected to do. All Access courses consist of a number of units that reflect a range of subjects and skills and City of London Business College offers the following pathways on its Access programs:

  • Access to Business
  • Access to Social Work
  • Access to Nursing
  • Access to Teaching

How long is the course?

Full-time: 12 months
Part time: 24 months

What is the qualification?

Access to Higher Education (NOCN)

What are the entry requirements?

Home Students: No formal qualifications

Initial assessment is conducted to identify areas of strengths, weaknesses and levels of proficiency of students. The core components of the programme (Communication, Mathematics, Information Technology) and the study skills, are specifically designed to help the student to develop and build essential skills required in access and degree level work.

Overseas students: Four (4) GCSEs (or equivalent) including mathematics and English Language.

What can I do next?

On completion students can progress to higher education courses that are normally, but not exclusively linked to the option studied at Access level.
